EMERGING MAKER RESIDENCY

For the first time, Yorabode is offering a residency opportunity in our workspace, located upstairs at 177 Water St. We’re interested in hosting someone starting out as a maker that is eager to expand and strengthen their craft. We’ve come a long way as a company and are excited to share our knowledge of soap/candle making and scent design with an enthusiastic candidate. Our goal is to provide someone with a space to practice and create in with guidance as needed—we can be as hands-on or hands-off as you’d like during your stay.

Studio Features

  • Shared with Yorabode—you will have your own dedicated side of the studio (115 sq. feet)

  • Bathrooms and sink located on premises

  • Natural light + light fixtures

  • High-speed wireless Internet

  • Dog-friendly

  • Unfortunately, the studio is only accessible by a long flight of stairs at this time. Yourself, customers and supplies have to come up (or down) these stairs.

Benefits

  • Sought-out studio space in downtown St. John’s that is accessible 24/7

  • A supportive environment to test and develop your craft on a creative and business level

  • Shared access to office equipment including copier, printer, workstation and wifi

  • Inclusion in promotion by Yorabode, with the potential for your goods to be included in our monthly seasonal collections

  • Have regular access to our Production Manager (Lauren) who keeps hours of M-F from 10:30-5:00PM

  • Have intermittent access to our Founder and Creative Director (Emily) a minimum of once per month

  • Participate in our supply orders for reduced shipping costs and to avoid relatively high minimum order costs that many suppliers have

  • Opportunity to join on foraging excursions

  • Access to our wax melter and other equipment outside of our operational hours

  • Join in on Yorabode Open Studio events with the opportunity to share/sell your products to the public

Qualifications

Individuals interested in operating in our studio are invited to submit an application. To qualify, individuals must

  • Be a maker – with design and technical craft skills, near the beginning of their craft career (no age restrictions apply). While our expertise is in candle and soap making, we have dabbled in bath/body products and sculpture. Makers in adjacent disciplines will be considered.

  • Be willing to participate in Open Studio events (once monthly)

All applicants are evaluated on the following criteria

  • Collaboration, creativity and enthusiasm around their work. We'd love to have someone in the studio who is excited about being in the craft community and who loves their work.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and a goal to start a full time professional craft business in Newfoundland and Labrador

  • Commitment to be in the studio a minimum of 20 hours per week

Rent

Rent is $200/month (HST included).

Commitment

The residency will begin on March 1st. The successful applicant is expected to maintain their residency for a minimum of 6 months, but up to 2 years. An extension after 6 months will be mutually agreed upon by Yorabode and the successful applicant.
